I agree that Edgewood and Bluff Park are great areas with charming older homes. Jefferson County can be a mess, but I think I'd take that over that kind of commute.

How do you define "mess?"

Yeah its big and more heavily populated then aanywhere else in Alabama. Buying a car tag wa the biggest hassle and that has been mitigated considerably.

You mentioned the heavy population, which isn't for everyone. I was thinking mostly government ineptitude, which I know can be said about most places. The only problem I had while living in Jefferson County (besides expensive water bill) was renewing my license. I went to the office on Arkadelphia road and was turned away even though according to their website and the signs posted, they were still open for business. Also, like you said that can be mitigated by taking care of it in another county.

Overall I'd recommend living in the areas I mentioned before over having a long commute. Whatever issues there are with JeffCo can be overlooked.

I definitely wouldn't consider living all the way in Montevallo. There are worse things... Such as sitting in traffic in D.C. for 3 hours. However, if you can live closer into town for the same cost, do that. Homewood can be a bit more expensive but not that much, especially if you consider the difference in gas cost. Also, you could check out the Glen Iris/Glen Iris Hills area. Those houses tend to be a little less expensive than the ones closer to campus and tend to have a great neighborhood feel. I would check out some place on Green Springs Avenue. Not sure if you are renting or buying so it's hard to say.

Well complaining about that would be silly, since he is already moving here. You could move to a city with really heavy population. On the grand scheme of things Jefferson county, isn't heavily populated.

No, I was talking about car tags. If you live in Jefferson co. you have to renew your tag in Jeff. Co. Now they let you do it in a number of places, other then just downtown and Bessemer like it was during the early days of the bankruptcy.

No mess. No issues.

I'm glad that problem has been solved. Wonderful. The original poster seems to have some concerns about living in Jefferson County and is considering Montevallo. I think there are legitimate concerns to living in Jefferson County (as there would be anywhere), but I think those concerns can be overlooked when considering the commute and great areas like Edgewood and Bluff Park. I lived around the Lakeshore/Homewood area and would readily recommend it. Mess and all.

It is the section of Homewood bordered roughly by the Palisades to the West, Samford U to the south, Valley Ave to the North and Hollywood/Hwy 31 to the East. It is the older, more affordable section of Homewood compared to Hollywood which is just about on the level of Mountain Brook for pricy-ness and exclusivity IMO.

Make sure you try some Saw's BBQ while you are down there checking the neighborhood out.
