At street level and you can tell the big difference. It's a 47K seat stadium. That camera is mounted on top of the Medical Forum building. Just wish Corporate Realty could get started on Carraway because once that start up, I think some interest will come to those empty lots from 13th Ave N to 15th Ave N.

Happy to have it? Yes

Will it prove to be a good investment? I believe so

Is it yet another example of Bhm / AL not daring to dream big enough, to fail to manifest a truly game-changing development when the opportunity was in-hand? Absolutely.

I don't think that's an uncharitable assessment. However, I think the stadium is expandable. Even so, the age of the mega stadium is over. If you look at the seating capacity of NFL stadiums, 65,000-70,000 is the typical size.

I see that the Jumbotron is starting to be constructed. Looks like it will be a nice size.

College attendance is dropping too, for several reasons: It's getting too expensive for the average family. Ticket prices are approaching $100 each; hotel prices of near $500/night (including taxes) with a 2-night minimum are not unusual; parking is becoming very expensive ($40 at my school); going is a hassle with traffic, etc.; and all games are in HD and available to everyone. Unless you're just a diehard fan and have to be there for tailgating and the gameday experience, it's just not worth the expense and hassle. Even Alabama decided their stadium was too large, downsized for more premium seating. You couldn't see anything from the top of the upper deck anyway.

Isn't Birmingham's new stadium 55K capacity instead of 47K as stated above?

No 47,100 is capacity. It is being built to accomodate expansion to 55K-65K

I'd wager they can expand it past 65k if they wanted to. It seems to have the "bones" to support up to 80k. They'd just have to demolish parts of the original structure to expand beyond 65k.

They are putting the finishing touch on the scoreboard support on the south end of the stadium and are now in the beginning stage of putting up support beams for the upper deck on the east side (visitors side) of the stadium.
