pretty cool article from Roy Johnson on al.com:

How the USFL came to Birmingham, and almost didn’t

i had wondered what the timeline was in terms of who contacted who first, and when.

I find it interesting that it was (some officials in) Birmingham that suggested/insisted using LF. I had thought it was a perk that USFL officials liked that we had to venues close by and that the scheduled warranted it's use.

I also like knowing they were committed to Birmingham the whole time.

And that Birmingham was actually a hard sell.

Yeah that too. I guess the AAF left more of a bad taste then I thought.

I don't think people really and truly understand the massive economic impact that this new league is going to create for the City of Birmingham! 40,000 room nights, all within the city limits of Birmingham! With all the success the city is enjoying right now, I wonder if there will soon be new hotel construction in the downtown area.

And with all the regular seasonal demand, the burbs will get a taste of the action too. Hopefully this will go a long way to building regional cooperation the next time Birmingham needs help landing a project or event.

Essentially it puts Birmingham on television for the entire Spring. The other thing is if baseball goes on strike (Dear God no, please. I live for baseball season), then we're just about it for team sports aside from the NBA.

We did just have the Kelly Hotel (Hilton Curio) open on 1st Ave N & Richard Arrington. The developer of the Elyton is sitting on plans to turn the Brown-Marx building into a hotel - hopefully that project transitions from stalled to active. I think it would also include tearing down the small parking deck on the corner of 1st and 19th and replace it with a much larger deck.
