I have an airline voucher that I am looking to use in the latter part of December when I have some time off. I'm probably looking at a 2-3 day trip. I'm interested in Birmingham from an historical perspective - I am teaching 20th century American history this year and Birmingham figured pretty prominently so I thought a visit might yield greater perspective and information to share with my class. Are there museums and/or tours that would make a short visit worthwhile? Any suggestions would be great.

As far as lodging, I can get a family rate for any Starwood hotel (Westins, Sheratons) so any suggestions there would be appreciated, and, of course, I would want to sample highlights of local cuisine. I also wouldn't be opposed to taking a half a day for a hike if there are good nearby trails.

Other than extended time in Baton Rogue, I haven't spent much time in Southern cities, so any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks.

Sloss Furnaces is also good. It's downtown, an industrial museum. Also Vulcan has a good overview of the region.

As stated, Sloss, Civil Right Museum, Vulcan would be "must do's". When you say local cuisine, there are several to choose from depending on what you want. If you are looking to spend some money, Highland's Bar and Grill would be the must eat place, followed by Hot and Hot Fish Club, Bottega, Veranda, and Ocean in no particular order. They are actually all with in a few blocks of each other, so that is no problem. If you are not looking to spend over $20 a plate, then the number of places becomes too many too list

If you must stay starwood, then definitely the Sheraton downtown. If not, then you should also check out the Tutwiler, Redmont, and Hotel Highland.

Hey everyone, I'll be visiting Birmingham for a couple days and will arrive tomorrow night. I didn't want to start a new thread just for this so I was wondering if yall would expound upon some cheap yet iconic eateries. I really don't want to spend more than $10 if possible. Thanks for any suggestions.
