I've just found this forum and have a question about the best route for an upcoming trip. Next weekend, I will be driving from the Boise area to Redding, California with a van full of dogs. Mapquest suggested Route 20 which cuts across the southeast corner of Oregon and takes me straight on down to Redding. I am unfamiliar with the terrain and the towns along the way. My biggest concern is finding gas stations and safe places to let the dogs out (one by one) to potty and stretch legs. I would appreciate responses by email in case I can't find my way back here. SE Oregon sucks to drive through. Watch out for cops, and make sure you drive the speed limit. If it says 55 and there is no one around, drive 55. The entire state, mainly that part is a speed trap.
I-5 straight from turn Oregon, straight into Cali., to Redding.
There's gas stations all the way thru. Plenty of Dog friendly stops on I-5.
Yreka, might your first stop in Cali. I just don't know what highway you would take across from Boise to get into Oregon. That would be a less traveled highway maybe.
But I-5 goes straight North - South thru Oregon and California. Faster moving traffic, plenty of gas and places with Rest Stops.
