Yes, The Power of One is one of my favorite books!

There is a sequel, Tandia. It is not nearly as good, it's written with a different "voice," but I did get through all 900 pages of it. I tried reading Toma & Hawk by Courtenay, but I couldn't get through it.

Atlas Shrugged.

And for entertainment, the Hyperion Cantos.

I was a librarian for 28 years and cannot possibly remember five of the best books but there were some that stuck in my mind that left an impression and a couple changed my life.

The greatest book ever written would, of course, be the Holy Bible.
Living on the Ragged Edge by Charles Swindoll
The Helper by Catherine Marshall
The Black Swan by Day Taylor
The Story of Jumping Mouse by Joe Steptoe and The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein are two children's books that everybody should read.

Ooops, they are more than 5!!!! Sorry. And my list would not end here. I might write a second list later on.
I LOVED Girl with a Peal Earring and I'm so excited to see it on somebody's list! In fact, I'm excited to see "The God of Small Things."

Awesome.

Oh man, I feel like I should update my choices because I've read some wonderful books since I posted that, but I still love the ones on my original list, too. I won't replace them, I'll just say that I also love:

The Grapes of Wrath -John Steinbeck
East of Eden -John Steinbeck
As I Lay Dying -William Faulkner
Cass Timberlane -Sinclair Lewis
Cannery Row -John Steinbeck
