I am moving to Boston next month. I want to avoid the Ghetto's and shady neighborhoods, any advice?

I am looking for nice neighborhoods other then Back Bay, Beacon Hill because they are the most expensive.

Looking for area's where there are some students. A place where a a lot of people are looking to live inside of a affordable budget. Where there are things to do and places to go

Needs to be close to the City and not near any Ghetto's, gang activity, projects....

If you want actual advice on neighborhoods, you need to state how much you can afford to spend, where you will be working and what sort of commute you can handle (how long, by car or by T, etc.)

I recommend Jamaica Plain, my favorite Boston neighborhood. Its cheaper than back bay and beacon hill, doesnt have much crime, and has a nice community in general, in terms of cultural and general activities. I lived there and loved it.... and want to return...hopefully soon

This question is so general that it can't be answered.

I wonder how many post questions such as this just for reading entertainment?

Definitely check out Mattapan and Roxbury, they're perfect for what you're looking for.

Try out Allston and Brighton - lots of students in that area and decent housing (if you are willing to have roommates).

I would also look into Medford.

Try Cambridge, Somerville, Watertown, Newton, Allston-Brighton..the latter is the real centralized area for students..

In general, stay away from Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan; I know that there are decent pockets in these areas, but a newcomer ( and many long-time area residents) couldn't easily find them..

My good man, not everything in life is so complicated. Vague or not there are still some very good answers that can be given. I am very open to whatever. My preferences are minimal except for the very few mentioned. The question is more asking people what their impression is of Boston, where to be, and advice on staying away from Ghetto neighborhoods.

Its not rocket science and if you feel different then I urge you open your mind and look beyond what is obvious!

again, define "affordable". and for that matter, define "ghetto". I'd consider Allston a student ghetto. when I lived there it was dirty, bed bug infested, prone to crime, and filled with drunks at night. It was worse that some parts of Roxbury. I'd consider parts of South Boston to be "ghetto"

It's not rocket science- fix up your question and elaborate more on what you want or no one is going to waste thier time helping you. otherwise, just don't bother w/ this thread and move to Beacon Hill
