but I'm from NY. Is the stereotype true? Will I really be hated? I'm a nice person with a good education, and I just want to escape the hole of NY. What do you think?

No, I don't think you will be hated. Of my closest friends, one is from NYC, the other is from New Jersey.

I would caution you to be careful about your reasons for leaving, and to think about whether Boston is the place to move to, if you're trying to get away from something you don't like about NY. Where in NY are you from? If you're from NYC or vicinity, do you want to leave for the reason that you're fed up with city life? Well, Boston is smaller than NYC, but it's still a big city by general American standards. It has crime, congestion, some run-down neighborhoods, TRAFFIC. Less of most of these things than you'd find in NYC, but you could be setting yourself up for a slap of reality if you move to Boston because you've fooled yourself into believing that it's just an overgrown small town, free of urban problems. Whether you're from NYC or upstate, if the drawbacks of life in NY you want to escape are high taxes, corrupt big government, etc., you'll be sorely disappointed if you choose MA as your Shangrila.

Regarding your concern about the kind of treatment you could expect because you're from NY, that depends on you. Exude an air of NY superiority, go around putting down Boston right and left, and you're likely to get a cold reception--with good reason. Don't do this, and you should be fine. You might take some occasional good-natured ribbing, but taking that for what it is, and receiving it with good humor is all that's needed to get along fine with people. So, again, it's up to you.

Best of luck finding the right place for yourself. It's bad, living somewhere you really don't like, but just make sure you choose the right place to escape to. As long as your attitude is good, no need to worry about the reception you as a NYer would receive in Boston. Just be sure of why you want to leave NY, and be realistic about whether Boston would offer more of the same. Good luck.

Muffin- welcome! I have been in Boston for about 6 years along with attending school here in the early 90's. You'll be fine- just ignore the silly Bostonians when they act up

I live about 30 miles west of the city and honestly avoid it at all costs. Out here in the country, things are nice.

Where are you moving from?

Feel free to PM me anytime.
