So sorry but in IMO if you want hip Boston is not the place. If you want upper class, well dressed professionals then there is lots to choose from. Drinking a latte and going to yoga doesnt make someone hip.

Maybe some people in Charlestown are hip (spilled over from cambridge and somerville) but for the most part these people are the high paid white collar professionals i spoke of earlier.
Boston is not hip. Too expensive. You can find hipper people in Missiin Hill, Roxbury/Lower South End, Dorchester Center, and to a lesser extent Roslindale.

So are you saying it's hip or it isn't? Those neighborhoods are all in Boston.

Central Square in Cambridge can be/is kind of hip (or do I mean hipster?... it's too confusing to me)...but I'm 56, so it's hard for me to detect.

It's so dirty with litter, though, and too many beggars and down and outs literally lying around. I went to Toscanini's for ice cream the other night, and that seems hip, with the hip staff and the educated and/or hip customers out the door on a hot night. Then I went to Clover Food Lab. Boomerangs thrift shop was already closed, but that would've rounded out my stroll.

But seriously, I am confused about hip vs. hipster, and have no patience to re-read the thread.

Can a yuppie be hip but not be hipster? Are hipsters not hip?

Is Whole Foods Market at all hip...was it ever?...or too common nowadays?

It's not clean, that's for sure.

No, it's not like Lexington Center. It's a fairly normal urban area. It used to actually be gritty. No longer, it hasn't been for a couple of decades.

I think Allston Village may actually be cleaner or at least not any worse.

The outside of CVS is filthy with litter, and often beggars in front.

The news boxes and mailboxes and the T entrance sign often have graffiti or stickers all over the surface.

Not surprising if I see a dirty jacket or other clothing item just left in a corner or on a bench.

I don't find it pleasant at all but the vibe with interesting and/or funky people seems fun at times.

Allston is a mess. My gf lives near Twin Donuts, where Brighton, Cambridge, and North Beacon meet. So. Many. Rats. There is consistently vomit on the sidewalks on Saturday mornings. There are always bums hanging out right outside Tedeschi, and they occasionally think it's a good idea to more or less stand in my girlfriend's driveway down the street from time to time. Couple weeks ago, some druggies came up to us and followed us for two blocks asking for some money to get to South Station. then they tried to sell us an obviously stolen bag from TJ Maxx, saying that we could buy it from him now and then go return it for twice the price. Eventually they left us alone.

I just find it kinda funny to see all these 20 year old girls wearing all these skimpy tight dresses and 5 inch heels walking down Brighton Ave, carefully avoiding vomit, rodents, and drug addicts.

I don't think most of these people are all that interesting or funky- just on drugs.

It's still pretty trashy in the literal sense simply because there are so many people and businesses. I just drove through it yesterday to get to Harvard square and it was busy and dirty in the flying debris sense. But I agree it's hip.
