What is the best way to get to logan at 8:00 am by MBTA?
I am coming from Forest Hills and usually would go to State and Blue line to Airport stop then shuttle. It's been a while. Is there a better route?

That's your best bet.

Easiest would be the 7:11 Needham Line train to South Station, then the Silver Line. It will cost an extra fare if you don't have an unlimited, but it saves a transfer.

I would not bother with that.

I have lived here my whole life and have been on the commuter rail maybe twice. Maybe this is my big chance? I have 2 stops in walking distance. Do they still collect the fare on board?

Yes.

Be prepared for delays, a walk from the Commuter Rail platform to the Silver Line, and a VERY slow Silver Line ride that can be impacted by traffic (although probably won't be too bad going outbound at that time).

Maybe I'll stick the original plan

I would. I just wouldn't chance the commuter rail unless the Orange Line is dealing with apocalyptic delays. The Silver Line is slow, and you're talking about being on surface streets at a very busy time. The Blue Line is almost always faster. Even with the shuttle connection.

You can pay on board, but there is a surcharge if there is a ticket window or vending machine when you get on.

The walk from the platform to the Silver Line at South Station is trivial; just one end of the waiting room to another, then down an escalator. Obviously if the Commuter Rail is running late, don't bother and jump on the Orange Line instead. If it's on time, then I would guess there is a better chance of an unforseen delay on an 11-stop Orange Line ride than on a three-stop Commuter Rail ride. Either way works, though.
