I'm moving out to Boston soon and I'm looking for resources to help determine where to live. I've narrowed the neighborhoods down to Cambridge, Somerville, Fens, South End, and Beacon Hill. Wish me luck finding an affordable apartment in the latter two

Some resources I need include:
* Alternative public transit sources. I checked MTBA but I hear there are college shuttles going around? Are they free? Do you need to show ID each ride? I'm 22, look college-aged, so I could sneak on
* Parking. I hear you need to apply for street parking permits, which are free. Any other info would be nice.

I guess those are the main requests. If anyone has a favorite place to live, visit, or explore that wouldn't be unwelcome. Thanks.

How big of a place do you want and how much $ are you looking to spend on rent?

I've used both the Harvard, BU, and Mass General Hospital shuttles many times and was never asked for an ID.

Somerville has some houses with driveways, but other places parking will be hard. Have you considered giving up your car? You really don't need it if you live downtown. You could spend the extra money on a better apt!
