My husband has been offered a job in Boston and most likely will try it out and live in the downtown for a year. I am a university professor and will try to look for a teaching position for the 2010-2011 academic year and if he's happy in Boston we'll move there permanently. While we'd be thrilled to rent a luxury condo/loft in the downtown, we would not be able to afford private school on top of that for our 3.5 year old. So, I would appreciate your input/suggestions regarding IF and WHERE we could find a luxury condo/loft space to rent in the surrounding areas/suburbs where our son could attend a good public school. Possible? Impossible? Please help. Thanks!

Default Chestnut Hill

There are several luxury condos in Chestnut Hill area of Newton. Newton schools are among the best you can find in the country. Both Ward and Underwood elementary schools are very well connected to downtown and are amazing elementary schools.

If your son is only 3, he'd be in a preschool for the next year. He can't attend public kindergarten until he's 5.

I'd say Winchester (since I live here) Its a great town with good schools, and a lot to do, easy access to the city

Or Arlington Heights Section of Arlington

Maybe Belmont as well

Thanks so much for the info! Aren't there any 4K programs in Boston or do they only have the traditional 5-year old Kindergarten? I'll have to look into that now. I am going to start looking for condos/lofts in the areas you have suggested. If you think of any more options or specific NEW developments that are completed or even almost completed (since we wouldn't be moving until next year), please let me know

Brookline and Newton are the obvious picks.
I don't recall seeing much "loft" type (mostly townhouse) condos in Winchester.
If you are looking for luxury (ie with concierge service, ... etc.), I don't recall much in Arlington.
After that, I suggest looking at places in the south like Hingham (coastal luxury).

Other options include looking at Avalon apartments.

The Josiah Quincy School in downtown Boston is very good. Urban Peasant, at least, might know whether you can get your child in if you live intown.
