I would say not likely. The city of Boston is far too made up of people from everywhere except Boston to be clanish. Maybe a few small sections bear a resemblance, but really there is international influence in every corner of BOS. In a few spots where the "clan" mentality exists like certain parts of C-Town etc, yeah those old friends do not initiate newcomers quickly.

Boston is the primary city of its metro area, not one enclave-dominated section of the principal city. This being the case, as Bostonian08 points out, Boston gets more people from all over than one sort of out-of-the-way section of a city, like Staten Island, would tend to. There are areas in Boston, and some other cities in the area, which have that clannish character, but it's not like this all over the city.

When it comes to the issue of making friends, outside of certain particularly close-knit old neighborhoods, a general tendency for people in Boston to be a bit reserved until they get to know you may be somewhat more of an issue. However, I don't think that is as much of an issue as people sometimes make it out to be. It basically means that idle chit-chat with strangers is not the general norm when out and about in Boston. In more intimate settings, or in the presence of other people from all over, making friends in Boston is pretty much like making friends anywhere else. This means of course that what you bring to the table is a big factor, but if you're a friendly person, in a work or school situation that puts you in contact with people outside of those close-knit old neighborhoods, you should find that meeting people in Boston is about like it would be in other cities.

Staten Island clan mentality? What does that refer to exactly? I have been living on Staten island for 19 years. I was raised in Queens. I can answer any questions about Staten Island if you could be more specific?
