Hello,

I have been reading about Boulder in the threads and its cultural acceptance. I was wondering why the school district would be rather hostile to the idea of charter schools that offer full language immersion (thus showing cultural acceptance and even embracing it other cultures and their languages)?

I have been in contact with a charter school that offers language immersion and they were hoping to start a campus in Boulder county, but they informed me that, " Unfortunately, Boulder County School district is extremely hostile to start up charter schools. If you have a connection with a high level city official or a high level Boulder County Board member who might be interested in helping pave the way to a GVA in the area, we would love to meet with him or her."

Anyone has any connections that could help pave the way to a campus offering full language immersion in the area?

BVSD already has an elementary and middle school with dual immersion format. University Hill Elementary (University Hill Elementary School) and Casey Middle (Casey Middle School) offer that.
I can't speak about hostility to the charter schools, as there seem to be quite a few of them thriving in the district.

I realize there are very few immersion programs, and all of them in English and Spanish. We're looking for ways for Boulder district to open up to other full language immersion (not just in Spanish, and not just dual immersion).

We would love for our kids to attend a school that offers full immersion in French.
I know a lot of people are also interested in having their kids learn Mandarin.
(Russian is also offered in several schools as it seems to be a great skill to have in the world of tech)

It would take more time than I could give to a CD post to explain some of this. I'm not sure they person you spoke with was correct, anyway. BVSD already has several charter schools. It also has schools, particularly in some of the older parts of the district, with lots of empty seats. Any charter school will take kids and their money (state/local funding) away from the neighborhood schools. Given that, I don't think they're hopping to approve any more charter schools. Since that they have several dual immersion schools (granted, English/Spanish), they may not be receptive to another one. (See below) However, the worst they can tell you is "no".

Pioneer Elementary in Lafayette is also dual immersion English/Spanish.
