MOUNT KISKO, N.Y. — Bert Sugar, an iconic boxing writer and sports historian, has died. He was 75.
Jennifer Frawley, Sugar's daughter, says cardiac arrest caused his death on Sunday at Northern Westchester Hospital. His wife, Suzanne, was by his side when he passed away.
Sugar was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005. According to the hall's website, Sugar wrote more than 80 books, including "The 100 Greatest Boxers Of All Time." He also appeared in a handful of films, including "The Great White Hype" starring Samuel Jackson.
Frawley says anyone wishing to honor Sugar should make a donation to the boxing hall. She says, "he was really a brilliant man."
RIP, Bert..I can say without a doubt that this man lived boxing and had an almost unlimited knowledge of the sport and boxing history. Will be truly missed.
Here's a man whose departure leaves the world a lesser place. Thank God we have his vast work on Boxing. He will surely be missed. This man epitomized the character of the sweet science and his knowledge of the history of the sport added to its greatness.
Most definitely, an iconic figure of a bygone era - fat cigar, Capone hat and all. I always enjoyed his colorful comments and keen observations. It was always delightful and impressive to see a man who sincerely appeared to be in passionate love with the one thing he wrote and spoke about all the time: boxing!
Your passing saddens us boxing fans.
Rest in peace Mr. Sugar.
¡Vaya con Dios!
