Perhaps but beliefs clearly are important in influencing behaviors. If you have any doubt about that then ask yourself who's behavior you would most like to see in a neighbor if you were forced to choose.... that of a devoutly fundamentalist Muslim or that of a devoutly fundamentalist Jain.

DALAI LAMA ON KINDNESS: "Right from the moment of our birth, we are under the care and kindness of our parents, and then later on in our life, when we are oppressed by sickness and become old, we are again dependent on the kindness of others. Since, at the beginning and end of our lives, we are so dependent on others' kindness, how can it be that in the middle, we would neglect kindness towards others?”

That would depend completely on their personal interpretation of their religion. I would prefer the person who uses their religion as a motivation to help others.

I don't associate with religion or belief. I consider myself to be a very kind person. Beliefs don't guilt or scare me into being a kind person because I will burn in hell if I don't, its just who I am. If you have to try hard to be a kind person, then you aren't a kind person.

I have met far too many people who were cruel to others; who lied to and cheated others, who would do horrible things to others - gossip, backbiting, sometimes even rape or physical harm - and then turn around and say, "Yes, but it's ok - they are unbelievers, and I am a believer, so it doesn't matter what I do, I'm saved!"

I trust peoples' actions, not their words nor their motivations. I don't care what they believe or who their god is - it is their actions that prove what sort of person they are. IMO, anyone who preaches that believing in a god justifies their actions towards others, is going straight to whatever hell their religion foretells.
