I was on Trulia today looking at home values since we are thinking of buying in Buffalo within the next 5 years hopefully. I know the area pretty well since my GF lived right on Elmwood near Bryant and I would constantly be there. When I clicked the crime overlay I was shocked to see a ton of violent crime over all the area's I expected to be pretty nice. A Rape, burglary, robbery, armed robbery. It's not a year or two old, this all seems to be in April and May, probably about 20 incidents within a small area of EV.

What's going on? Is it really that bad? Have things gotten really bad in the neighborhood in the 2 years we have been gone or have they been there, just neatly concealed?

It's bad if you're out at night... Unfortunately crime has spread to where people of means live in the city.

It has gotten worse. I don't know why, I don't remember it being nearly this bad 5 years ago - But from what I've heard crime is up everywhere.

I think it's worse because of the economy and the poverty that Buffalo sees. I would be pissed to own a 700k house in Elmwood and have rapes and robberies everywhere.

I remember walking around when she lived there and minus some little sketchy pockets not being concerned for my safety. I guess that's what happens when slummy areas are right next door.

I've always been very cautious when walking at night anywhere in the City of Buffalo going back to the late 80's/early 90's. It doesn't mean I wouldn't go there at night and walk around the Elmwood Village or North Buffalo but I am very aware of my surroundings.

It's funny I feel much at ease walking nearly anywhere in NYC (safety wise) than I do in the "nice" areas in the City of Buffalo.

Like I said though nothing would stop me from doing it and nothing has ever happened to me in Buffalo. The only time I ever someone tried to mug me was in Niagara Falls when I was about 17 years old. I ran like the wind and got away!!!

There's the issue, NF. haha. I feel the same. I've walked through Jackson Heights at night. FH, Rego, Astoria, heck, some parts of Jamaica and still felt pretty okay.

I think NYC's safety is in the well lit and well trafficked areas. There is only so long that the garbage areas can stay contained. They always seem to spill out. I wouldn't want to walk down Main St, even during the day. Just need more cops and gentrification to hit Buffalo. There is plenty to move people in and get them to stay, now they just have reform all these areas.

I have never felt at risk during the day walking anywhere in Buffalo. I'm not sure what area of Main Street you are talking about, skilldeadly, but downtown is certainly fine during the day, with all of the crowds of workers walking around. Really, the only place left where Main Street is still a bit sketchy is between Ferry and Delavan and then maybe a little bit around Amherst Street.

I do a fair amount of nighttime bicycle riding around North Buffalo and Elmwood Village, and have never had any problems or concerns. When walking at night I generally stay very aware of my surroundings in many neighborhoods (for example, on West Side or Elmwood Village side streets) but in my North Park neighborhood I don't feel the need for that level of paranoia.

That's what I meant. The areas you suggested. Main isn't bad the whole way. Main by South Campus is not too delightful either. My GF lived on Lisbon and I always felt like I was going to get robbed there.

Only 20 in 2 months?

Given the population density there, it's actually quite impressive. It's something like 1 incident per thousand people.

Elmwood Village is a very busy, very populated area. There's bound the be crime.

Yes there is bound to be crime, but these are violent crimes. I live in Forest Hills and there are FAR more people that live around here. We have very little violent crime. And the crime there is within the last couple years, Elmwood is all within a month or 2. I understand the idea that Elmwood is near some sketchy areas, but this area has 600k houses and bills itself as a well cultured area.
