I guess I'm really just looking for a change of scenery. Even though I was born in Houston, Texas I love the cold, snow, and city life. I'm also looking to be closer to Canada, since I love it there so much. Rochester is a little bit more of a drive and I just wish the shopping was better and the city was a bit bigger. I was in shock when I moved from Brooklyn to Rochester, I thought it was so tiny! I'm thinking about Williamsville since the schools seem better. I've also always known that I never want to stay in rochester.

Rochester isn't that much smaller than Buffalo in terms of city size/population or in terms of metro area population.

Also, Pittsford is arguably the "best" school district in Upstate NY and is outside of Rochester, with nearby Brighton and a few others in that area that are not too far behind in that regard.

As mentioned before, if you want something good in terms of a school district and close proximity to Canada, then the very good Lewiston-Porter SD is definitely worth a look. Niagara University is actually in Lewiston, by the way. Niagara County Community College is in Sanborn, which is in the Niagara-Wheatfield SD, which is a solid/good SD. Both of those districts are outside of Niagara Falls.

why don't you just move to Canada then? Buffalo is about the same size as Rochester and I would argue Rochester has better shopping. If you came from Brooklyn and you enjoy major cities, you're not going to find what you're looking for in any mid-size city.

Many mid level retailers pass Buffalo up to come to Rochester. For instance West Elm toured Rochester and Buffalo looking to open their first NY store outside of Brooklyn and decided on The Armory in Rochester. Eastview Mall has many upscale retailers. Another example is Von Muar which recently opened its only store in New York at Eastview.

For schools, Pittsford or Brighton schools are nationally ranked. You're not going to find better schools than in the Rochester suburbs. Where are you living in Rochester? Are you living on a dangerous street in the city or are you just paranoid because the media blows everything out of proportion? I've never been offered any drugs in all my travels through the Rochester area. The body found in the canal was from a distraught woman who was having mental problems. She most likely drowned on her own. No foul play was suspected. The other case of a teen drowning is also not considered to be a crime. It was also most likely somebody who drowned.

"...college in BUffalo..."

Can you be more specific (i.e. Buffalo State, UB, etc.) because that would help with location. Rents are way up in Buffalo (not sure exactly why but there is a bit of a bubble moving through the real estate market). A nice 3BR + utils is closer to a grand these days. There are many nice neighborhoods inside and outside Buffalo. If you are looking to buy and live long term, depending on how many kids you have you can probably send a kid to private school and live more cheaply in the city versus paying higher taxes in suburban locales (and some of the city schools are exceptional and so are some suburban ones, others not so much). Some suburbs are a bit on the downslide and some parts of Buffalo are overpriced. Really need more detail. If you are going to end up in Southern Ontario then why stop in Buffalo at all?

Due to Wheatfield being the fastest growing town in the Buffalo area and being a suburb, many people from Niagara Falls have likely moved to that town or others nearby.

Along with DeVeaux, LaSalle, around its Little Italy(outer Pine Ave) and the Hyde Park area are still pretty solid/fine areas of the city. This street view is in the DeVeaux neighborhood: https://maps.google.com/?q=4301%20Le...3f&hl=en&gl=us
Those neighborhoods in Niagara falls may work and you could also look into to private schools there. Sacred Heart Villa School | "Where Learning Begins"

Catholic Academy of Niagara Falls

Niagara Catholic Junior-Senior High School

Niagara Falls High isn't too bad in terms of a truly urban HS. While it has had grad rates around the state percentage in recent years, it had slipped for a couple of years. However, the grad rate improved from 64% in 2014 to 70% in 2015. https://data.nysed.gov/gradrate.php?...d=800000041633

Very few of the middle class people I know in WNY actually live in Buffalo.

Everybody lives in the suburbs.

I think that is true of many American cities, and certainly Rochester as well. Nobody with kids will touch the city because of the schools. One of my relatives works in a school on the East Side, and she says the conditions there are beyond deplorable. Kids roaming the hallways, cursing out teachers, and full blown fist fights routinely. IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. The charter schools and private schools are better, but bottom line suburban schools are overall superior (with the exception of City Honors), and I see it staying that way.

A lot of times in "older" cities, you may have a chunk of a city and maybe outer city neighborhoods on other sides of town that are middle class. Those use the public schools may use magnets. So, besides City Honors, some may have kids at Hutch Tech, Arts High, DaVinci or even Emerson or certain programs at McKinley, as all of those high schools have grad rates at least in the mid 70's and up in terms of percentage. I believe Hutch Tech, DaVinci and Emerson have grad rates at least in the mid 80's to the low/mid 90's in terms of percentage. Olmsted may be another option.

In "younger" cities, many essentially have outer cities neighborhood that would be first and second ring suburbs in an area like Buffalo.

Haha I wish it was that easy! I'd be lucky just to get a study permit and attend college up there! I know a little bit about Canadian immigration and it's not really an option right now. I need to finish college first and get a real profession before I can even be considered. Rochester doesn't have H&M or Urban Outfitters, that's why I think the shopping could be better haha. I actually used to go to Brighton during my first two years of high shcool and absolutely hated it. Luckily we moved to East Irondequoit and I graduated there. I would much rather have my son go to a school like East Iron. No I'm not paranoid, this happened near Meigs at my husband's old address before we got married. The other thing happened while driving in Henrietta. I'm 19 and hate the media. I don't watch the news here, the only news I follow to some degree is CBC. No need to defend Rochester, maybe it's just not for everybody (: I just want to know more about Buffalo suburbs and Niagara Falls area.

The catch is located about two blocks down the street from the point you selected:

Navigate your intrepid little yellow google man from the above location to the casino (send him against traffic on that one-way street--you have no concern for his welfare) and you'll see what the catch is. The state of 4th in those blocks is hardly an outlier in regards to the condition of the surrounding neighborhood, either
