So whats so unattractive about Buffolo? Not a rhetorical, Id like to know. The mid range cities have a lot of drawbacks, I know because Ive lived there. The biggest cities have the most draw backs and are mostly hype especially now that most tasks can be handled remotely.

Personally, Im looking for low crime, happy people and vibrancy/charm. Im a small business owner and although I work remotely, pro small businesses gov & culture is a must. Lastly -- law enforcement and government.

A reductive policing style is a deal breaker.

Idk about Buffalo, but the Hudson Valley is famous for bullying, lazy, unprofessional LE.

When I lived in Albany years ago the first person who called the police got the other person arrested just based on accusation alone. Mad at your ex spouse, neighbor, roommate or friend? Call the police and say they threatened you. Boom, arrest and legal fees or plea bargain and record if they cant afford attorney.

Whenever a relationship went sour, I used to defensively call the police on people when I didnt want to just to protect myself from them calling the cops on me. Imagine how that kind of policing effects the culture of a place, mentality of the people?

When I lived in Philly I mentioned I was from Hudson valley. One of our party told a horrible story about his son who went on a Hunter Mountain ski holiday and wound up hand cuffed to a wall over dmv paper work. Dad had to drive 6+ hours at 3 a.m. to bring correct paper work.

I bet those people and anyone they told that story to never went on another NY to holiday.

NY LE is the primary reason why I never returned to my home state. I've accomplished too much to risk arrest because I said the wrong thing to the wrong person or forgot to mail something to dmv.

Places vary, but Ive never had legal problems anywhere but NYS and its been 20 years. If it was me, legal problems would have followed me and Ive lived in Southern States famous for no nonsense police. Since I left NY Ive developed an admiration for the police due to the excellent police Ive encountered. Police are like anything else, its from the top down. Depending on management police can be an asset or paracites.

Anyway, I didn't intend veer off like this. Simply the insight of one person and I hope I dont sound critical of Buffalo I'm sure that region has a lot going for it like decent people, historic charm and beautiful scenery.

Basically comes down to 3 things that people find "unattractive"
1 - climate - some people just have an aversion to winter weather, sometimes the hype of the city's reputation exceeds what people actually experience here and scare people away
2 - economic - Buffalo is not a boom town where growth occurs for growth's sake, and as it is not a fast growing place there is not as many shiny new things being built, concurrent growth in GDP, or jobs driven by population rise - this also affects other jobs and opportunities which may reach a lower ceiling than larger and faster growing cities. Also, as a Rust Belt city, Buffalo had decades of loss and stagnant growth that the area has only begun to turn around from in the last 10 years or so, so a good part of the city is still a work in progress.
3- state government - to a certain percent of people NY is "evil" - high tax anti gun liberal nanny state - even though actual laws and tax rates vary by region and municipality, culture varies by region, and NY generally provides a high level of services for tax dollars received. City of Buffalo taxes, or instance, are much much less than LI taxes, primarily due to lower home costs and assessments. There is also no City Income Tax in WNY, unlike NYC.

As far as police go, other than a couple of well publicized incidents during protests last year, issues with BPD and the community have been pretty much non-existent this year.
