"The total solar eclipse destined to hit town in April is expected to draw thousands of visitors to watch as the entire sun is blocked out by the moon.
It will also draw NASA.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration will host programs and exhibits around Niagara Falls beginning April 4 and throughout the week leading up to the April 8 eclipse. It’s part of a collaboration between NASA, the state Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation and several local tourism sites.
NASA will send scientists, subject matter experts and astronauts to such sites as the Niagara Falls Public Libraries, the Underground Railroad Heritage Center, the Aquarium of Niagara, the New York Power Authority Power Vista, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute and Niagara Falls State Park for special activities.
“Niagara Falls is a spectacular natural backdrop for this once-in-a-lifetime event, and working with NASA to provide the programming and education leading up to the eclipse is sure to attract thousands of New Yorkers and visitors to the city,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said.
Niagara Falls is in the eclipse’s path of totality, which means it’s a prime viewing area to have the best and longest view of the eclipse. Viewers there will see activity begin at 2:04 p.m. and end at 4:31 p.m. Full totality will start at 3:18 p.m. and last about three and a half minutes.
The eclipse is expected to be a big deal wherever full totality is visible, drawing thousands of tourists to cities in the path of totality, and drawing residents out of their homes to experience the astronomical activity.
A state task force – addressing everything from marketing and education to traffic control – has been assembled in advance of the eclipse. State Parks will specially open select campgrounds for the eclipse – all of which have already been fully booked.
Free and open to the public, some events may require reservations. A calendar of local events will be listed at niagarafallsusa.com. Activities across the state are posted at iloveny.com.
NASA will deploy representatives to other cities that are in the path of totality to hold similar programming.
A partial eclipse that took place last month wasn’t visible locally because rain clouds obstructed the view of it."
