I read consistently in this forum that certain parts of Buffalo can be rough/iffy/shady etc. I'm beginning to wonder what people mean when they say that certain neighborhoods are questionable.
Do you mean violent crimes once a week/month? Homeless on the street? Noisey neighbors? Dirty/squallor? Drug-dealers? Please explain your meaning.
all of above - somewhere I would not walk outside in the daylight hours, where children cannot play outside for fear of a drive by shooting, where I would not list a home for sale because I would be afraid to do so (sorry, my safety comes first).....there those would be some of my first concerns

East of Main St and West of Grant St and all the lower west side are rife with problems -- more crime, drug dealers, junk rentals, etc.
North of Delaware Park and South Buffalo are generally reasonably safe; also Elmwood strip. I have a daughter who lives in S. Buffalo and loves it. I used to (long ago) live in N. Buffalo and loved it. They have crime as well, but not on the scale of east or west sides.
This seems to be the general consensus - that crime and grime are in these areas. But what frequency are we talking about here? Are people getting shot daily, weekly, monthly? Is there a steady stream of gang violence? Do we find drug dealers in every corner? Are you likely to get mugged in broad daylight? Is car-jacking a concern on a daily basis that you would prefer a paid parking lot. . . . . I guess I'm just trying to cut through the hype and the constant awareness that TV reporting / fear mongering can sometimes make us feel.
I checked a comparator of Buffalo with other cities I've been in and for those that are considered at about the same level - I've walked in those cities and hav enever personally encountered (knock on wood) problems. I've also only known maybe <5% of people who report having had a personal encounter with such problems in the many years that they've lived in those cities.
I'm just wondering if this is the kind of problem that people talk about or fear but never really experience - with some modicum of carefulness.
watch the news.....every day something is going on....it's not ALL of Buffalo, but some very shady parts of the city are very rough. Ive had employees that worked for me years ago in the city be involved in murders and drug busts - once when i was managing a restaraunt in the city, they did a drug bust in my parking lot. I am not saying there isnt drugs in the burbs or crime, but it certainly is less of a concern. Take our advice, if a home looks too good to be true - say 12,000 - well, there is a reason for it.
No. People live everywhere. It's their choice.
What city doesn't have all "this"?
You're right- every city has daytime dangerous neighborhoods, it is just so much more evident in Buffalo because of the large areas of the city affected. In cities that not in such a state of collapse as Buffalo, it is a lot less visible. By the way Zanna, you are quite a Buffalo booster. That is admirable, but must be a lonely task! Are you familiar with the Greek mythological figure Sisyphus? He rolled a boulder uphill every day only to have it roll back down at night. Like boosting Buffalo, a hopeless task!

Thank you for writting your comments. I'm not only boosting Buffalo, but the Western New York region. I think somebody has to do it. Would you ever put your family down? You always give another chance and keep hope.
I enjoy living in WNY and love the beauty of the region. Location says it all. There's so much to see and explore here.
