If I could just up and move to any part of New England it would be the area between Lenox and Great Barrington MA. Probably Great Barrington because it has such a great functional downtown. Lenox and Stockbridge get a lot of tourists in the summer, but even they would be great places to live.

Lenox has stunning architecture.

Thanks so much to everyone for the input. We're not really looking into Southern NH or Western MA - I'm actually from Swampscott MA, went to UNH, lived in Portsmouth NH for 4 years, and currently work from home for Autodesk in Manchester NH (but lived in Manch for about 6 months first). I just never ventured much into VT while I was there. I decided I was going to move to a few different places for a few years after college, and then ultimately come back to New England. I lived in Southern CA for a year, which was an experience but I was very happy to leave. I moved to Charleston SC after that, met my now husband, and have been here 6 years. I always envisioned coming back north, but then my family moved to AZ. We were very rooted - grew up in the same house my dad grew up in, had the same third grade teacher as my parents and sisters, etc. We'll never move to AZ, and my husband's family has always moved around - so now we're sort of struggling to find where we belong.

There's a lot about Charleston that we love, but as we are settling down more, we're not sure it's where we want to raise our family. The influx of people moving here also saddens us, as we see a lot of the things we love being overtaken by development. It's hard to imagine leaving - thinking of someone else living in our house, not being able to watch our trees grow... But there are other parts of living in Charleston that we would be happy to leave behind. It's a matter of balancing the pros and cons I guess, because nowhere's perfect.

It will probably help us when we come up there in May.
