I have this happen at Marshalls and TJ Maxx sometimes. They have a clearance section in each department, and I'll pick up sheets or a bowl or something from the clearance aisle only to have it ring up at full price and the cashier to basically tell me "too bad, nothing I can do". So OP I can understand your customer's annoyance - it shouldn't be on me to "prove" I'm not lying where I got my item, nor should I have to go back and shop more when I thought I was done and waited in line already. If the store cares enough they need to make sure a clearance sticker is on each item, or scan the aisle more often in case other customers put an item there when it didn't belong there. Or they can put wall scanners near the clearance aisles so people can check the price it rings up and make sure before they get in line. Regardless, the inconvenience should never be placed on the customer, IMO.

I had that happen at Target a couple years ago. I was purchasing an "online return" baby swing. The sticker on the front, which said "online return," had a number that matched the UPC number. I can't remember the clearance price (printed on the sticker, which clearly matched in number with the UPC number), but I think it was around $20. When the item was scanned, it rang up for its original price ($100+?). I pointed out that it was marked down, and the cashier said, "Sorry. This is what the register says." When I pointed out that the number matched, and the sticker said the sale price, she said she couldn't do anything because the register said... The manager did fix it because it clearly was a computer glitch.

I also had that happen at my local grocery store. My pint of pasta salad rang up at a very expensive bottle of wine, and the cashier said it had to be correct because the computer said... Uh, it said "soandso brand wine" and clearly what was in front of her was NOT wine. She got pissed at me and at first refused to call a manager over. Finally, after I said I didn't want the pasta salad anymore, she relented and called the manager, who was livid at the ridiculousness of the situation.

USUALLY, computers/registers work quite well. Sometimes, though, there are those glitches.
NO, NO, NO,! THE COMPUTER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!

I was in a grocery store where the cashier hit the 00 button instead of the 0 button when putting in the cash I handed her and had to call the manager when she realized the register did not have the two plus million the computer said was my change. DANG IT! THE COMPUTER HAS TO BE RIGHT CAUSE IT PUT IT IN WRITING!
