Cheap and Irvine don't go together. Maybe you can look on craigslist for a room rental in someone's house. For actual apartments, you'll find better pricing in Costa Mesa which isn't too far away. Try Lake Forest too. Its on the other side of Irvine.

IAC owns most the apartments in Irvine, you can get rates at their site:

Rental-living.com

The rents for private rentals is pretty much the same (maybe 5-10% less).

If your not afraid you could get a cheap place in Santa Ana and commute.
metro rail or car.
