BART likely to wait on parcel tax for new train cars - San Jose Mercury News
I've seen about 3-4 measures go up recently related to parcel taxes...
It's the new tax in California. Soon enough it will scale to contend w/ property tax.. LOL

What's your alternative suggestion for raising the local component of the $3B+ of the funds needed to replace the BART cars?

Not waiting until you need $3B+ to replace them and gradually charging the people who use bart by hiking fares .. sound fair enough? I don't recall i can charge someone a parcel tax when i need to replace my car.....

Only in the land of Oz does that make sense to people... More taxes though.. Business as usual and all too foreseen.

The voters approved a half percent sales tax for BART years ago. Or maybe it was one cent. I forget.

Perhaps BART should look at other alternatives like investing a little into these cars to extend their service life.

The fares cannot be raised anymore than they already are. BART is becoming absurdly expensive. Time to start cutting jobs and running smarter schedules.

No one in Norcal wants to get involved and protest the public worker's lavish benefits, pay, and retirement packages.. I say raise the fares.. You don't fight against the insane costs they rack up for the employees of the rail line, you pay the price.

What complete and utter nonsense. Their yearly ridership is almost 100million. Tell me again they can't raise the money over a couple of years. Are people really that stupid?

I didn't even know what a "parcel tax" was until I read this. So the idea is for every homeowner to pay $45 per year for BART?

Californians mandated a massive prison system, that money had to come from somewhere. These parcel taxes are pretty much the only way to keep the state from falling apart at the seams and I'm surprised voters finally saw the light and voted for them. Californians almost always vote for massive spending projects like prisons but then vote against any tiny tax hike that is required to pay for everything that is squeezed by our massive prison spending. Even in the Bay Area they always vote against taxes.

BART is pretty flush with cash though, that's probably because they have cut their schedule so much and let the trains go to seed. But they do need to spend a lot to get new train cars, they are disgusting at this point and riders deserve better. They can't raise the fares, the cost is already ridiculous, it's $140 a month just to ride from Oakland to SF every weekday of the month, and it's only a 20 minute ride.
