We are looking in the area, not confined to SLO to serve dinner at a homeless shelter for Xmas day. The trick will be finding a place that would allow a 4 yr old and 10 yr old to participate (in some capacity) as well. Does anyone have any leads?

Maybe a nursing home would be a good place to have the kids learn about serving others. I applaud your willingness to help.

It would be more useful if you cooked and donated the food or gave cash.

I disagree. This is a great opportunity for the OPs kids to learn the value of helping those worse off than them. But I think it may be safer for young kids to learn how to serve others in a nursing home setting than a homeless shelter. When they are older they will be better equipped to handle any problems that homeless adults may present. Its NEVER too early to show your kids that someone always has it worse than them.

In addition to this, for a longer term, Dan DeVaul can use help out at his place.

You might have more luck on one of the other 364 days of the year. I'm just sayin.

Thanks for the information... Making food and giving money, great idea but we actually already do that. It helps others but it defeats the purpose of a soft start to a lifetime of hands on giving. I find with my kids, it's more real for them when they experience up close and personal. We thought Xmas was also a perfect time to start (in the spirit of the season) that everyone talks about. Very good point on the nursing home avenue, will begin to research that right away.

They serve food to the down and out in Grover Beach once a day. Its at a church just off grand ave. I thinks it's about 9th st. Call Grover Police Dept., ask for the watch commander, I'm quite sure he/she knows the address.

Isn't it great we live in a country where people have to rely on charity not to starve to death?

Just an idea but maybe talk to the people at the old San Luis Mission. Lots of homeless hang out around that area and Prado Day center is quite a hike for some of them in bad health so the mission by where the bear fountain is would be a perfect spot.
