Hi, I am planning to sell my car in California. I bought it in Pennsylvania and it was titled there. Right now, it is registered in Connecticut and I have a Connecticut driver's license.

I've read the DMV site and looked through the forums and I know that I'll have to get a smog certificate for the car. I know that the title has to be transferred at the DMV with both the seller and buyer present since the title is from out-of-state.

But, if the car has CT plates and my license is from CT, does that complicate things? Has anyone had to do something like this before? I will not be staying in CA but will be out of the country for at least a year while which is why I want to sell my car so I was hoping that I did not have to get a CA license or register in CA.

Thanks!

The easiest way with no hassle or smog certificate is to sell the car to a Licensed California Dealer...

I grew up around the car business and we always were picking up out of State vehicles and all the seller did was sign over the title if it was free and clear.

I doubt it's any different now... you could call a few Dealers and find out... generally, good used cars priced right sell quickly.

I bought a few out of state cars. The DMV never gave me a lick of a problem if I had a signed off title.
