So would I. When I worked in Bakersfield I got called out to many many car accidents on I5 when I had the duty.

I very much like the idea of not driving through LA, load up in SLO town, get off in Oceanside. Sleep or look at the waves out the side of the train.

Sounds cool.

Most of the accidents I had to handle involved big rigs on I5 (we handled the claims for many self-insured trucking companies). 3 lanes both ways would make it much safer.

I'm not so hot on the current high speed rail line because they aren't running it down existing lines for the most part and the farmers aren't happy to have their land divided up by a rail line. I like to eat more than I like to rail up to SF or down to LA; and generally try not to upset the farmers around here if I can help it.

The problem with trains as constituted is that we like our cars. Suppose I take a high speed or a low speed from SF to LA, I still need to get around with my car.

Ski trains to Tahoe didn't work for the same reason. Our mass transit within destinations sucks.

Big rigs on the Grapevine, like Big rigs on Donner Pass keep things lively.

I don't see a high speed rail working.

Yeah, I like my car. Motor all over the place. Have always preferred to drive myself to the ol destination.

I'm not sure how many passengers they project to have or how many actually ride the Amtrak now that runs through Fresno on the way north.

But I might use it to get to SF and then rent a car. Just not sure how many will actually do that either. It could be a big boondoggle.

I hate to tell you this, but the # of people visiting Vegas hasn't lessened year to year. When you check out the "Historical Visitation Statiscs" near the bottom of the page, yes we took a dip when the economy sank but each year the # of visitors has increased.

Las Vegas Stats and Facts

I 2nd the idea of expanding I5 to Sacramento. The slow down for semi's can be quite dangerous when the daredevil drivers around you don't want to slow down & merge, not to mention the potholes that you could lose a small child in

I read recently there have been plans to move the agricultural inspection station closer to the NV border, at a spot that has more lanes. Of course, right now it's all talk....

The one I hate even worse? 58. Why in the world with ALLLLLLL that empty space surrounding it, why can't we enlarge it?

I'll just close my eyes and pretend LV is booming. Never mind blogs like this LV Revealed

and reports of casinos cannibalizing each other to stay open.

Doing things to keep Californians traveling to LV = good.
Thinking we will keep traveling there when we can just gamble in CA = not so good.

Not Nevada's (or Las Vegas') job. Its California's job to widen and maintain California roads. California would rather do other things with its money than maintain and expand its roads.

When I lived in Utah I always used to say the state symbol should be the traffic cone (the roads are always under construction there). California's symbol should be the butt end of a dark sedan with its brake lights on.

One thing that bothers me greatly about this state is the absurd amount of taxes people pay to live here, (even people on welfare and food stamps pay obscene taxes) coupled with not seeing any benefit from the taxes in any way shape or form. I've lived in three other US states and have relatives in many other states. The only time I've ever seen no benefit from paying increased taxes in my life has been property tax increases to benefit schools. Even in other states schools are a black hole of funding. But here? I could vote yes on a tax increase, and I know it will never benefit me or any other person in this state. Sacramento is a giant sucking black hole where money comes in and is never seen again.

And Californians don't see anything wrong with this. I'm sure the people of this state have paid for that expansion of I-15 many times over. Sacramento will get to it. Someday. Many other things are a priority, such as sending government lackeys to Vegas to stalk Californians at gun shows.

Simply not true. Caltrans says hello.

Locally here in Fresno 168 and 180 were funded by combination of state and local measures.

99 down around Kingsburg and heading towards Visalia have been worked on repeatedly.

99 up to Sacramento has seen a lot of work.

The weather is hard on the roads in Utah. Not so bad here generally. It's good for my cousin who lives and works in Salt Lake City and owns a construction business, but the frequent working on the roads does get old if you are the one waiting for the guy with the sign to let ya go on your way.

Blah Blah Blah, I hate taxes, blah blah.

Locally we vote for tax measures and bonds fund schools. Clovis Unified then builds beautiful new schools and educates the children. Now some of those kids qualify for free lunches because their parents are poor or don't have a high school education (42% of the kids that attend the school my nice and nephew attend so qualify). So we pay to let them eat so they can actually learn. See? Actual benefit to society.

You are quite free to remove thyself back to Utah.

Well, we are a big state. Harder to run than relatively tiny Utah. But if we actually paid to improve I-15 it would have been improved....

And you seem to be a Californian now complaining. Enjoy your stay in Orange County.

And who has to go to Vegas to see a gun show anyway?
