MOD CUT Linked below is an interesting National Geographic article about California farmers in the Central Valley cooperating with The Nature Conservancy to encourage and support the return and welfare of migratory birds of the California flyway.

I note that threads about political and economic woes and hate are runaway favorites on this forum ... while threads about positive things, including the natural wonders of California and their conservation, have very little response. Now, any bird lovers out there?

As an avid birder and amateur ornithologist, this story really peaked my interest when I first heard it. The Central Valley is a hugely important winter home for many migratory species. Some of the 100,000+ Snow Geese wintering in the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge, come from as far as Northeast Siberia. The Valley is also home to about 90% of Yellow-Billed Magpies, the world's only bird that's entire natural range is within the borders of CA.

Thanks for a great first response, Gentoo. We'll see how long this topic is allowed since it doesn't deal with doom and gloom

Its been great for waterfowl hunting over the last 20 years.

Some old dudes I go hunting with have a blind on some paddies in "the sink".

The areas around Staten and Bouldin are great places to hunt as well if you can get on.

The farmers had to do something after probably being responsible for many bird birth defects up in the delta. That's a bit doom and gloom though.

I Hunt waterfowl in the San Joaquin Delta and Northern Sacramento Valley.

The problems with defects were from a build up of selenium and other heavy metals in irrigation run off from farms in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. Look up Kesterson.

For some reason Hetch Hetchy came to mind. It's been awhile since I looked that up. Thanks.
