1) San Francisco - I was in awe the first time I saw the SF skyline in the 80s. Then when I lived inside the city in the 2000s, I could see just how vast and varied the skyline was from my 26th floor condo.

2) LA - Used to see it more often when I worked in the city, always got a smile from me. The US Bank building is marvelous to see while coming out of the Fullerton station on the metro.

All the other cities on the list don't really have noteworthy skylines IMO.

Chicago and NYC top both SF and LA.

Sorry, I think San Francisco has a better skyline than NYC. NYC just has too many buildings and not enough natural beauty. San Francisco is certainly dense and architecturally impressive, but it also is right on the Bay, surrounded by hills, trees, the ocean...not just some manmade park. Chicago is better than San Francisco's simply because more, taller buildings but not as many as NYC, and it is right on the lake and has many trees.

I love Boston's skyline. It was a real treat every time to take it in each time I took the ferry out to Provincetown. OMG is it impressive. Such a nice town too. It's a pity we cannot steal Boston and bring it to the West Coast.

I totally agree with this. I also think it has a better color to contrast with the beautiful blue ocean/sky than the Bay Bridge, as well as a better back drop. I'm really more of a nature person but the Golden Gate Bridge is a marvel in my opinion. I love driving over it.

Can tell you the sorriest skyline - Fresno. Hasn't had a new high rise of any import since the mid 1960s. I don't think there's another city of a half million people anywhere in the country with such an embarrassing downtown.

Not sure how you're defining "high rise," but there has been lots of new construction in downtown Fresno. The Coyle Federal Building (this is the tallest building downtown and was built in the late 2000s), Tower at Convention Center, 5th District Courthouse, UCSF building, the IRS building, etc...

Golden State Plaza (aka Del Webb Building).

There's been nothing on par with it since it was built in the mid 1960s. The federal courthouse not withstanding (it gets its height from various design elements, not from "floors"), most of the new buildings are pretty "low rise". In my opinion Fresno has the most underutilized, unimpressive downtown of any city of a half million people in the country.

huh? what are you saying?

It's unfair to compare complete skylines of some cities to partial downtown photos of others.

I'll go with San Francisco and San Diego. I think the beauty of a skyline is enhanced when it's closer to the waterfront.

Yes, water enhances almost any scene with the wavy reflections of color and pattern.
