Hwy 1, definitely. Beautiful drive. If you have to spend hours behind the wheel, why not enjoy the view?

If you are so inclined to stay overnight along the way, try out Fort Ross Lodge. I stayed there last summer. Told the owners I wanted to move in, permanently. Individual cottages with an ocean view.

As an alternative, take the road from Cloverdale to the coast. That way you can enjoy the majesty of the redwoods.

My wife and I did a lot of driving last Saturday on a day trip. Oh my!

When you reach Ft. Bragg, go down to the harbor. If it's still operating there will be a small stand grilling oysters on the half shell with butter and garlic. Excellent. The last time we were there was five years ago. Two thousand miles is a bit far to travel for an oyster but I can get good, fresh ones here and grill them myself.

Hwy. 1 by all means! But, don't be in a hurry. Take your time and soak up the beautiful scenery. Wife and I took that trip a few years back. Actually split it into two slow drives; first from the City to Bodega Bay where we spent the night, then on to Ft. Bragg the next day. If you take this route note that food/fuel services are few and far between and plan accordingly. Enjoy!

I can only do short stints on Hwy 1 nowadays. But going up to Ft Bragg should be perfect. Do go slow as others have suggested. I came around a hairpin curve driving with my mother once, and there was a cow in the middle of the highway! A high hill on one side and a cliff to the ocean below on the other! Thank God we were going slow!

I find it tiring to try to see the view and drive at the same time. So, taking time to stop often and have a relaxing look, is the way to go.

By all means enjoy the drive. Use the pull outs if you are holding up three or more cars. Be patient when following and don't tailgate! I drive my slow truck & camper or my speedy little Miata on 1 several times a year. Always amazed at how many crazy drivers are on that road. One of the most enjoyable drives with the worst drivers. Just saying.

Wink And...

Please drive safely, don't litter, and, for god's sake (and mine), use the friggin' turn outs so faster drivers can pass you.
—Oh. Another thing. It's a beautiful drive... on any one of those roads or hwys. So, please... don't just slow down to admire it all, pull the frick over and get out of the way. People live and work here.
Thank you very much.
Love,
Leftcoastie
