When *many* people say they "know' California, what they really mean is that they can recognize A) the street they live or work on, B) downtown LA, and C) Huntington Beach.

Well the state is a heck of a lot bigger than that. So how about we get away from the vitriol of real estate and politics for a bit and have a little fun spirited contest? There's no prize aside from the goodwill and recognition if you get them.

All you have to do is post 1-3 pictures that you personally took (no pilfering from Google) and ask us to guess where the picture was taken. ALL must be from somewhere within the State. They can be as challenging or easy as you want. But like I said....your picture of Downtown taken from Dodger Stadium won't take longer than three seconds to figure out.

Let's see some of the REAL California.

I'll start. These are three pictures I've taken.

What are the locations?

Those are Kern County. Picture number 2 is on highway 58 going from Bakersfield to Tehachapi right where the road dips down into Caliente Creek. That's Bear Mountain in the background. Not sure on picture 1 because there are no surrounding landmarks to go by. I assume picture 3 is in the Mojave area?

Correct on pic #2. But not on #1 or #3.

So this is a contest to recognize places in California based upon generic California back roads photos.

PS I have driven Highway 58 from 101 to I-40 many times. Apparently not enough to recognize the particular feature. Guess that means I dont know the road.

Well, I got plenty of photos of vineyards, back roads, and redwoods. Have to get them placed so that they can be referenced by web links.

Maybe I should just post some pictures of rosebushes

Silly contest.

#1 Could be anywhere it's so much the same but it looks like near Julian West of Ramona. #3 looks like that roller coaster section of the 395. The scenic route from San Diego to Tahoe.

#1 could be somewhere in Fremont (84 from Fremont to Sunol) or in the North Bay.

I just got back from a mini-vacay to SLO, Hearst Castle, Paso Robles wine country, etc. I'm gonna say Pics 1 and 2 look like somewhere in SLO County in the wine country on those roads like 46, etc. Land the Hearst Corporation owns so that nobody can ever build on it to make it look like OC. Pic 3 looks like Kern County, Hwy. 58, Bakersfield area.

How many did I get wrong???

No. It's intended to see how well we know the State besides from the usual tourist spots. What kind of contest would it be to post a picture of the Eiffel Tower and then ask people to guess the city?

Whatever works for you I guess. Why stop there? In your case, maybe you can contribute by posting a picture of a crack in the sidewalk.

No matter how innocent or fun, or debate-neutral a topic one tries to post, someone like you always has to come along and drop a turd on it.

Photo number one looks like Coarsegold, but as I see all the pics I realized that all of California's mountain communities have dead weeds and look alike.
