I need to drive from Yreka to Carson City, Nevada - google says I5 to 89 to 45 to 395. I expect I need to stay updated on any fires on the way.

and advice?

I believe you mean I-5 to Mt. Shasta then exit on Highway 89 southeast to Old Station. At Old Station take Highway 44 (not 45) toward Susanville. 44 will connect with Highway 36 just east of Susanville, so you'd be on Hwy. 36 just briefly thru Susanville and then connect with 395 just southeast of Susanville. I actually drove some of this route yesterday-Mt. Shasta to Old Station. The fires around the Burney & Hat Creek area are out, but you'll drive thru the burnt area. CalFire has a decent website that's usually pretty current regarding wildfires. They have a little trouble if the fire occurs on federal lands, but I think also have links to the National Forest sites (Shasta Trinity NF & Lassen NF).

If you're making the trip soon, weather shouldn't be an issue. But if you're doing it in the winter you should definitely carry snow chains.

thank you, Jaybee, and this would be soon so I don't expect to see snow.
