Hello everyone!
I am planning to move out to northern cali for a job this coming june.
I will be floating around fort bragg, willits, ukiah, and lakeport area.
I was wondering which area to find a house if I will be commuting to all these towns in mendocino county.
I heard a lot about marijuana and homeless..etc about ukiah area but is it overall safe to find a place in those areas?
I have never been to california and I would greatly appreciate any tips you guys might have!

It all depends on a number of factors:

How much will you be paid, and what/where can you afford to rent?
Do you prefer a coastal environment (Fr. Bragg) and larger town, a rural/forest environment (Willits), a more isolated area (Clear Lake), and so forth. IMO you should choose a more central location that doesn't require you getting in and out of our home via isolated winding roads to get to your job locations. So that would rule out Lakeport/Clear Lake. There would be more amenities in Fort Bragg. Willits and Ukiah would be central to your whole field area, so--shorter drives to get everywhere but Ft. Bragg.

What's your job? Is this some kind of forest service thing?

Hi! thank you for the first reply. I find it hard to get some local advice on anywhere else online but..hopefully this will work out.
I am going to be a pharmacy grad intern until I get licensed and will be a full time floating pharmacist (around July hopefully).
I think I am willing to pay $1000~1500 for a rent, but I just want it to be a safe neighborhood for me to live alone.
I looked at the map and looks like I will rule out Lakeport area.

Ukiah has safe areas (do a site search for Ukiah; there was a thread by someone asking about good/bad areas of town a few months ago). Willits isn't all bad; there's a farming community up there, thriving farmers' market. Check Craigslist for Ukiah and Willits to see the options in your price range. It sounds like interesting work. It's a beautiful part of California! Affordable, too.

Honestly, if you Google around, you can pull up chat sites for locals in some of those areas, but I'm not sure I'd recommend that. They can provide a skewed view of life there; people love to complain, know what I mean?

Go to this link and read about the Ukiah. Reading down you will also see any threads that mention Ukiah.

Rent will be cheapest in Lake County, look at Lakeport or Upper Lake. My mom has a two bedroom two bath house she rents in Lakeport for $1,200 a month and it's discounted because it's in a slide area.

If you will be traveling to all the areas listed, I recommend looking at Willits.

You are moving into the Emerald Triangle, I think it's as safer than lots of places in the Central Valley or Bay Area.

Welcome to Lake & Mendocino Counties!

I wanted to add, a lot of people LOVE living in Redwood Valley, which is north of Ukiah. I have two nieces who both live there and they love it. I'm not sure what the rent rates are in Redwood Valley or Willits. You could probably find out by looking on Craigslist - Mendocino County.

Another place for cheap rent would be Upper Lake in Lake County. It's closer to Mendocino County than Lakeport. There's a big Indian Casino there.

Again, Welcome! I think you will love it.

I like the whole area, especially love Fort Bragg & coastal. However like Ruth posted, some of the roads are like roller coaster rides. I would not commute Fort Bragg/Willits daily as an example. If my job was along HWY 101 corridor, that’s where I’d be looking, centralized.
