Thanks for the info on Brookings! I must have lucked out when I was there as it was very sunny and seemed bigger than only 6,000 in population! Still, I don't mind the rain and cold at all and will keep Brookings on the list as a possible place to retire to. :-)

The Oregon Coast is incredibly beautiful, and my husband and I go up there at least once a year to visit family in South Beach, right outside of Newport. The biggest problem with living there for me would be the inability to grow any veggie garden without the help of greenhouses! Beautiful country though. The people we visit moved there from the Central Coast of California, have adapted to the wet and grey, and love it! They say they are never coming back to California, and they are both natives! I like the culture on the coast, but also like the Corvallis area, and I like Portland but would not want to live in Portland. I love California, love the coast, love Redwood Country, the hardest part for me about moving is that any of the places we love and our heart would point us to move are either too expensive, or there is no economy, thus no jobs.

You know, one big problem with living in Oregon, though this might not be as big a problem on the coast, is the pulp mills. The fumes can be dangerous to health, and I mean imminently dangerous. Some people seem to be more sensitive to those chemicals than other people, but when I spent a year there, there would be times when I literally couldn't breathe. The chemical exhaust would somehow fill my lungs so I couldn't get any oxygen. It would pass before I completely suffocated, but it was scary. And there are toxic chemicals in that stuff the pulp mills release.

Be careful when considering relocating to a state with a strong forestry industry.

Ruth4Truth,

You are completely right about the pulp mills! There are parts of Oregon that are completely contaminated by them, at least to my way of thinking! We noticed houses in Toledo Oregon were cheap, asked our relatives on the Coast about it, and they told us they had looked there until they noticed how much it stunk, and found out there was a paper mill there, they stopped looking!

Far fewer of them than there were - with them went a lot of living wage jobs, which is why so many former "wood products are king" areas are struggling. I'm certainly not nostalgic for the smell of a pulp mill, but a lot of the smaller towns pretty much folded after the only jobs left.

We have happily lived here on the south side of our mountain, at 2000', for 28 years. Most times in the Spring, I grow some cherry Tomatoes & strawberries, in 5 gallon plastic buckets, on my deck outside. They are sweet & delicious.....

We happily live in the mountains west of Sunny Valley/Wolf Creek, in southwest Oregon. We buy most of our vittles & other goods in Grants Pass.....
