I know there is the Oxbow Public Market in Napa and the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara and soon to be one in San Luis Obispo.

Here is an example of one:

Santa Barbara Public Market | West Victoria at Chapala

I am wondering have other public markets popped up in like major cities like LA and San Fran? Are public markets mostly in tourist areas?

It just looks like an indoor mall to me. I'd rather go to a farmer's market.

To answer your question, I don't know of any.

Yes, that's what San Francisco's famed Ferry Building is; the oldest public market on the west coast called the Ferry Marketplace. Still a pretty popular with locals and the tourists who wander in after taking pictures of the iconic building.

LA has one called the Grand Central Market downtown, but I've never been to it.

I'm not sure if it qualifies, but the old cannery row in Monterey has what might be considered a marketplace.

I wish there was, like on Bazzare Foods TV show. SB Public Market is a tourist spot IMO. Interesting food gifts type vibe. Once a week year round street Farmers Markets are a popular around here. No building needed due to mild weather. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Lazy Acre's are the best we got in SB. I need to checkout the Ferry Building and Grand Central Markets. Thanks for post them VD.

Yeah, but the public market has different offerings than farmer's market. For example, the farmers market in San Luis Obispo does not have a butcher, fish market, nor a food pantry. Sure it's probably more for tourists, but none the less, I'm not going to not patronize the public market. I think it's nice CA is embracing more of the healthy food eating life style.
