I somehow misplaced my registration renewal form which was due last day of Feb and did not discover the issue until last week. Luckily it was within the 30 days so I paid it online so the reg should be current (I am assuming it becomes current as soon as you pay the fees?).

Now a week later I still haven't received the stickers. To make matters worse someone has tried to peel off the current sticker on my plate (theft?) so my plate has no year sticker at all, just the month.

Question is - can I still drive around since I already paid the reg fees last week? What happens if I am pulled over for no sticker? Will there be a fine?

Carry your registration receipt with you to show if you are stopped. You should get your new stickers within the next week, if not call DMV or go into the office and ask them to issue you new ones.

probably easier to summit Mt. Everest than try to get a DMV employee on the phone, I heard they don't pick up calls and IF they do there is a hours long wait on hold and eventually disconnect.

I guess I've just been lucky then, I have called a few times and have always gotten through.

Just print out proof you paid and put it in the glove box until you get the stickers.

You can still get a ticket for no stickers even if you have registration. Having registration and having stickers are two different code violations.

The meter maids have started issuing tickets for out of date stickers.

If you get cited for no stickers you go to court and get it dismissed with proof of correction. easy peasy lemon squeezy

If a smog test was due, your registration is not complete even if you paid, all you did was avoid paying additional late fees. Yes you can still get cited and fine, then waste your time going to get it cleared up, but you still need to bring in a copy of the actual registration and not the receipt of payment. Then you still have to pay a processing fee. It might take days after getting the ticket before you are even allowed to go get it cleared up. Go make an appointment and get it taken care of.
