Hey everyone. Next month I'm flying from New York to San Francisco for a week and while I plan on renting a car no matter what, I was considering driving down to the LA area while I'm out there since I really wanted to visit there too. But is this do-able? I understand the trip is around 5-6 hours, but how much do you think gas would cost? And should I tell the rental car company beforehand that I plan on driving that far?

If you're planning on leaving the car in a different location from where you rented it, I'm pretty sure you're required to tell them, and it costs extra to do that. Is this your first time renting a car? For gas, look up on MapQuest how many miles it is by whichever route you want to take (there are several. Hwy 1 is the most scenic, but would also take the longest), and calculate in the cost of gas. It will depend on what size and make/model of car you want to get. Dodges get 35 mi./gallon, fyi.

SF to LA is 5-6 hours via highway 5, the least scenic route, under perfect circumstances (light traffic) and just a few short breaks (gas and bathroom).

As long as you return it to the same place you rented it you don't need to tell them where you are driving unless you are driving it out of the US. Check rates online and look for coupon codes. You can calculate mileage yourself, total miles / mpg x $3.00 (average price of gas in CA. right now)

If you want to see some beautiful coastline: take two days for the southbound trip. On day 1, head toward Monterey/Carmel from SF and take Highway 1 south to San Luis Obispo. Be sure to gas up in Monterey as Hwy 1 has few services on the coast. Overnight there then proceed south on 101 to L.A.

For the return trip, do the one day blast up I-5.
