this isn't a bad idea and seems more manageable.

maybe best to save norcal for its own trip.

Well you can always say you experienced 115-120 degree heat if you go!

Dude, stick to SoCal, save yourself the drive. Albeit the CA 1 is gorgeous, and worth a trip of its own. Nonetheless, you can do wine in either Santa Barbara or Temecula. Santa Barbara is accessible by train from San Clemente. Temecula is but a short drive away, and Old Town is quite an overlooked gem.

Then again, I did a 12 day road trip from LA to Vancouver, Canada, with stops in San Francisco, Davis, Portland, Seattle and the Oregon Coast on the way back...and I had a blast. BUT most of it was just a quick stop (SF we just stopped to say hi to a friend) and we chose to focus our energy on Seattle and Vancouver, BC. If we could do the whole west coast in 12 days, I'm sure you can do California in 7, as long as you don't mind rushing your itinerary. BTW the drive down the 1 from Seattle through the Oregon Coast, through the redwoods, and California's Central Coast - WOW. A must for anyone that appreciates raw beauty.

Sections of the PCH have had closures twice in the last 6 months for rock slides, etc.

The OP has never driven the PCH. I was simply giving him fair warning to do some research, and to be aware of these kinds of issues that could throw a real kink in a tight itinerary.
