Forums are funny.
Many have left, not by choice but by what has happened/is happening in California.

Whether it's the drought, the poor schools, the unaffordability of housing and everything else. It seems like if you don't think California is Heaven on Earth people think you are crazy there.

Why? I have friends from states in the South, Midwest and Northeast and while most of them have some pride in where they live and still support their sports teams, they are willing to admit that their home state sucks or is below par in some regards. One of my good friends is from Indianapolis and he's more than willing to admit that Indiana kind of sucks in many ways. I have another friend from Ohio who also hated it there even though he is still a fan of all the Cleveland teams.

Californians on the other hand seem to feel a need to be #1 in everything. It's really like "America's America".
I suppose it's because Californians are sticking up for their state??

I've heard it all from non-Californians on my travels though Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and especially Montana. It doesn't bother me that people from other states talk bad about our state. Honestly, I agree with most of their negative opinions. Some comments are very stupid and seem 'made-up'. I don't even answer. No matter where you're from no state is perfect, no city is perfect and no town is perfect.

I have lived in Southern California all of my life and the state just doesn't appeal to me anymore. The welcome door mat for illegal aliens is the biggest stone in my shoe. Also, quality of life is eroding here because it's expensive to live in California. You don't get a big bang for your buck. Other than that everything is great. Just because CA doesn't work for me doesn't mean it doesn't work for others.

Go to the Reno CD forum, you say anything in the least bit negative and the regulars are there with their claws out almost before you can click 'submit reply'. I don't think most people in California are more or less sensitive than those in other states but when people who have never lived in the state and don't realize how big and diverse it is jump in with all sorts of cuteness like Commiefornia, Mexifornia, or People's Republic of California I have to exercise a good deal of self control to avoid reacting to it.

People come and go all kinds of places for all kinds of reasons of suitability or desire or challenge. 38 million is a big number. Especially compared to how many have left.

It's not about one's geographical location, as you'll come across this insanely stupid behavior and immature reaction everywhere. It's not limited to Californians, although it is quite prevalent there in the land of 'stick one's head in the sand and make believe it's not happening' -- for one example, the drought. But, it's really an individual thing and depends upon the emotional maturity of the person you are telling.

Normal people don't take it personally and get angry.... but adults who never grew up sure do.

It's a very childish reaction, unless of course the person is going on and on, whining and complaining, which is also childish. There is no shortage of adults who have not emotionally matured beyond 12 yrs old... even if they are educated and/or have a good job and/or manage their adult responsibilities well. They just never matured a day beyond 12 yrs old. They are EVERYWHERE. Doesn't their reaction make you feel like imitating their crybaby attitude, "wah-wah, you said bad things about my state, wah-wah, you bad person".... like a freaking 12 year old big baby.

Just be careful who you make the comment to and it won't be a problem. Problem is, it's hard to find emotionally mature people these days. Hope that (the truth) helps.

Has little to do with Californian defensiveness

Honestly, a lot of it has to do with the nature of the attacks on the state.

California has been turned into a sort of Snidely Whiplash villain by conservative talk show hosts, who love to portray it as dynsfunctional and out of money and pretty much the epicenter of everything they think is wrong with America. You know, the way they treated New York before 2001.

Listen to some of the ill-informed critiques of California and notice that the wording is often suspiciously similar, especially when the claim is outright false. I don't know how many times I've heard some arch-conservative refer to California as "bankrupt" or San Diego as "broke." The talk radio overlords seem to believe that we pay a 50% tax rate out here (my tax forms say otherwise), every house in the state costs $1000000 and is owned by a Chinese investor, and immigrants from Mexico have taken over all of our high-tech jobs, so the only way to get by is to work three minimum wage jobs and share a studio apartment with four friends, and even then your kids will join a drug gang while in school.

It's a kaleidoscopic mix of paranoia, racism, and political grandstanding. After a while, you get tired of it.
