Agreed! Either the Hollywood sign or Golden Gate Bridge.

Others would be: view of Half Dome from Yosemite, Santa Monica pier and beaches, San Francisco cable cars.

Exactly.

Though Mount Shasta is pretty iconic too.

I am always amazed at the size of Mount Shasta. To think that a volcano that size just sits there dominating the valley, it is still active, last report of a volcanic eruption was a little more than 300 years ago and it is actually two volcanos sitting on top of the remains of an older one that collapsed.

I used to live in NC and VA ad I respectfully disagree.

I agree that the Hollywood sign is ugly. But, I'm from New York and have lived in many other parts of the country, and I can tell you with fair certainty that if you ask someone outside of California what they think of when they think of California, there's a good chance their answer will be California = Hollywood Sign.

In terms of other iconic landmarks, as a California resident, I'd choose natural landmarks over man-made ones like the Hollywood Sign and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Yosemite for sure, but also Big Sur, the General Grant Tree in Sequoia, Death Valley, maybe Joshua Tree or Lake Tahoe. The man made landmarks of California pale in comparison to the natural ones, IMO.

You are so right RosieSD.

When I think of "iconic" I think that if you see that landmark you will know it is CA. I guess that is true of the Hollywood sign (gulp!). Also GGB, Half Dome, Ledbetter Beach, Big Sur road. Cinderella's castle?

I would pick the Golden Gate Bridge, but what about the Bixby Bridge? That's pretty iconic.

Also, how about Hearst Castle?
