To me, it doesn't feel apart of Santa Barbara County. It's more conservative, focused on wine and ag economy, and closer to San Luis Obispo's university than Santa Barbara's university.

All though, economically isn't possible for Santa Maria to split SB County and rights over Lake Cachuma were the big talking point. I feel if Santa Maria and Orcutt were able to make their own county it would take Arroyo Grande and Nipomo or Santa Maria and Orcutt becoming apart of SLO County.

Discuss. Thoughts?

It is it's own entity. Let's call it "Texas".

It's part of SB County but is definitely "North County."

BTW - "North County" is a lot more than Santa Maria.

The "North County" vs "South County" split has existed for many years, essentially ever since Santa Barbara moved on from its earlier cowtown days (and yes, it really did used to be a cowtown, before any of us were born).

It feels like its own thing. Overall I think it leans more towards Slo county, mostly because it has a lot in common economically and physically with some slo county cities like Paso Robles.

Wah SB was a cow town? This must have been pre-UCSB days.

The North county is too poor to even have its own services. LOL.

What jobs are there in Santa Maria other than agriculture and retail? Maybe selling drugs and weed

There was a movement some years ago, which has gone dormant, for northern SB County to split off and become "Mission County." Since counties are considered subdivisions of the state, such an action would require a vote of the state legislature.

Other counties in the state face similar issues. Take for example, southern Humboldt County and northern Mendocino County. These regions have often felt isolated from their respective county seats and have even considered merging to form their own county.

Santa Maria feels like it is part of Mexico. LOL. Many unincorporated areas and smaller cities in the SB county feels like small American rural town. Santa Maria, a city of 100,000 feels like it's a part of Mexico. esp the Northern, Eastern and Western parts. Only the areas next to Orcutt have the typical US rural vibe to it

Maybe West Santa Maria can join Guadalupe, the extreme North can join Nipomo (the Preisker Park area), the South can merge with Orcutt.

West SM can join Guadalupe since that's where the farmlands are mostly and very much like Guadalupe
