I like the greeness and more rural lifestyle north of San Franciso. I currently live in So.Cal and it is too hot here and everything turns brown in the summer. The traffic is horrendous. Next place I move to will have a lot of trees, cooler temps and a small town feel to it. Not sure where that will be though.

We live in OC but just bought property in Mariposa which is near Yosemite. Not moving for a few years but wanted to buy before prices go up even more. I hear there's not a whole lot of jobs there, but the next big town for jobs is Merced which is roughly 35 miles away.

Other than that, it is paradise (haha).
So, where do people go to work, or are they retired? Any commuters to Medford or Ashland?

Northern California - Greener, more rain, more expensive, friendlier people, better wages (depending on the area), foggy (depending on area)

Southern California - Rocky, smoggier, less rain, $$$(depending on area), crazy drivers, Hot inland.

I've lived in both areas and if I could afford it, I would choose to live in Northern California.

TWEETY...when you find that nice place let me know...I'm ready to move out of SOCAL myself., any place with better air quality and green landscaping.

Default Update

We decided not to buy in Mariposa. Beautiful place but too rural for me.

When I was sick of Southern CA, I did move up north, to the Central Valley (Stockton area). I really liked it: less traffic, no smog, slower paced feeling, yet plenty to do.

However, we're moving back to Southern CA (currently living out of state, I wish I never left Northern CA!) because that's where my husband got a job. It seems from my research that at least in his profession (teaching) the salaries are more comparable to the cost of living in Southern CA than Northern CA at this time, at least in the areas we've looked at.
