I'm possibly moving to the Santa Maria area for a new job. I was looking for apartment rentals online and wanted to know which ones are the safest, in the better or best neighborhoods, and are somewhat affordable. I have read some posts that South East SM and Orcutt are the best. I am in my late 20s and looking for something that also lets me have a small dog with a nice sized patio/balcony. Any suggestions? I know that if I land this job, I'll be coming to look but in the meantime, the websites for apartments do not help as there are maybe 10 listings total. Any and all information would be helpful. I had a family member that lived in SLO for 4 years and I am somewhat familiar with the area and cities between SLO and Santa Barbara. Wanted to keep my commute down to a minimum with gas prices and such.

For safer neighborhoods I think the general consensus is to look south of Betteravia Road and on down to the town of Orcutt. That said, I have no idea of the availability of apartments in that area. Good luck.

There are two fairly nice apartment complexes right across the street from one another, on the corner of Enos and Miller St. They are pretty much located in the middle of the South East area of Santa Maria. These complexes are near Vons grocery stores, the mall, movie theaters, Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, all which are located within a one and a half mile radius.
