As Californians we love to throw around the fact that California has the 5th largest economy in the world. What we dont often talk about is how the state went from 10th largest to 5th largest in just 5 years that's incredible considering this is against some of the fastest growing countries in the world between 2012 to 2017.

California since the reccession has grown double the rate of the U.S., and frankly has carried the country on its back. Yes that's with all the "regulations" , and taxes winch supposedly kill buissness. The data shows that California is proving over and over again the power of the golden state. When you think about just how expensive everything is in California for this state to still continue to grow by leaps and bounds and bringing the country with it really says something. Since the reccession California by percentage had the single fastest growing economy that's crazy! During the last 5 years with 12% of the nation's population added 17% of all jobs, and 25% of all GDP growth was from California alone Like holy ******.

I just ask that my fellow Californians continue to look at the reality that California is an awesome state with many problems, and a bright future. Don't let the nay Sayers tell you other wise after all the truth is in the data.

While this all is a true reinforcement of California being a juggernaut ... it is also a double-edge sword. This extraordinary economic power coupled with the highly desirable QOL characteristics we are known for has created a monster that is consuming itself through growth. The state is choking on its success and desirability.

Not to discredit the growth, but this is a bit misleading seeing we just came out of a recession, and the worst economic times in this country in 70 years in 2012. I remember reading/hearing back in college in the mid 1990’s that we were the 6th (maybe it was the 5th or 7th, it’s been a few years, lol) largest economy in the world. Seems like not much has changed except comparing numbers from a down economy to a booming one. Barring being in the midst of a recession I’m sure it’ll probably be about the same another 25 years from now too.

OP, when was CA 10th? The oft-quoted figure until recently, was that it was the world's 8th largest. I don't think it jumped from the 10th to 5th. 8th to 5th sounds more realistic. Probably depends on which source you chose.

It also fell harder during the recession so its path up meant a higher rate than the nation. Just stating facts.

California’s economy is now $2.747 trillion in size, eclipsing the GDP of the United Kingdom ($2.625 trillion) when measured in U.S. dollars, making it once again the fifth-largest economy in the world.

That’s a status California held once before, only to fall as low as 10th place at the bottom of the Great Recession.

Yup despite the problems,California's achievements are amazing...California was once far behind the East Coast/Midwest in regards to economic development and established cities like New York City,Chicago,Boston,Philadelphia,Etc.

Fast forward to 2019...California now has the Largest Economy in the Country and one of the Largest in the World...Just imagine we have a larger economy than Canada,Mexico,Australia,Russia,Brazil,Argentina or Africa.

California also created great cities such as L.A,San Francisco and San Diego with it's great airports and seaports,as well as one of the largest agricultural regions in the world.

This is also a State of Innovations which has spread throughout the World...Many things people use has a California connection in one way or another.

Some people said there is a Great Exodus in California...Well folks as we speak the state's population is approaching 40 Million which means this state is still desirable.

Some people called California a failed state...California's GDP is currently approaching $3 Trillion.

We also live in such a Beautiful State with our Mountains,Beaches,Deserts,Valleys and our National Parks, and we also have a Great Diversity of people and cultures from all over the World.

California truly is "The Golden State" and does have a Bright Future...Keep on shining California

I don't think the future is so damn bright. Over a trillion in debt which everyone ignores.
