Prior COVID infection more protective than vaccination during Delta surge -U.S. study

(Reuters) - People who had previously been infected with COVID-19 were better protected against the Delta variant than those who were vaccinated alone, suggesting that natural immunity was a more potent shield than vaccines against that variant, California and New York health officials reported on Wednesday.

Protection against Delta was highest, however, among people who were both vaccinated and had survived a previous COVID infection, and lowest among those who had never been infected or vaccinated, the study found.

Humm, Greece is now fining anyone who is not vaccinated and will do so every month. Wonder how the State would like that flow of income.

I'd support a fine for any vaccine-eligible adult who goes to the hospital for respiratory issues without being vaccinated. Maybe waived for the very poor and uh terrible outcomes.

Ah, so you mean you just saw what looked like more students coming to school. It wasn't clear and I misunderstood.

What I'm seeing right now is just a big revolving door; as one goes out, another comes back and so on and so forth. Luckily it seems to be slowing down some. But high case loads have all but broken requisite contact tracing so weeding out the sick is now dependent on them being symptomatic or testing positive if they're a part of the voluntary program on campus. The procedures keep changing and we're sliding towards a policy of ignoring exposure unlike before.

Inside San Diego city limits is the only area of the mask and other nonsense in far S Cal. Even Coronado said "nope". Ramona, Poway, Santee, El Cajon and lake side among others told Newsom to pound sand.

It's mostly because we live in an era of "do something" politics. Whoever's in charge needs to do something or risk looking like a feckless incompetent, even if the "something" is pointless... like sending out a few tests to each household.

I meant just in the schools. Each district varies a little but essentially all are implementing small group/cohorts, masks, etc. still. To me it only proves what I figured was true two years ago. Schools could've stayed open with some very basic precautions put into place.

Also in this article:

But acquiring immunity through natural infection carries significant risks. According to the study, by November 30, 2021, roughly 130,781 residents of California and New York had died from COVID-19.

The analysis did not include information on the severity of initial infection, nor does it account for the full range of illness caused by prior infection.

One important limitation to the study was that it ended before administration of vaccine booster doses was widespread.

From that school, I was seeing a sign of what's happening.

You'd think people would take me seriously now, but okay, suit yourselves.

I think some California school districts haven't peaked yet.

Interesting study about the effectiveness of masks.

With coronavirus transmission rates still extraordinarily high, health experts and officials are still urging people to do all they can to avoid getting infected: Wear masks in indoor public settings and avoid nonessential gatherings, especially indoors and in places where masks are not worn, such as in restaurants and bars.

In a study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters, Yale University researchers recently found that restaurant servers were exposed most frequently to airborne coronavirus particles compared with other workers in high-risk settings, according to a report summarizing the results of a study using mobile viral detectors clipped on their shirt collar for five days that accumulated virus-laden aerosols and droplets.

Of the 62 clips that were returned to researchers, five collected coronavirus. Four of them were worn by restaurant servers; and one by a homeless shelter staff member. Two of the sensors by restaurant waiters had exceptionally high viral load, “suggestive of close contact with one or more infected individuals,” the report said.

None of the clips worn by healthcare workers collected coronavirus, which researchers expected because of hospitals’ strict infection control requirements. The clips were in circulation in Connecticut in the first half of 2021.
