So we used to have a vacation house in California literally a few miles from the San Andreas fault so I downloaded an earthquake app. So one thing I noticed is that it NEVER reports earthquakes in California. Does anyone know why?

Is it myshake? It's set up to alert when there is an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or greater and I believe within a reasonable distance of the quake (you won't be alerted to a 4.5 quake in San Diego if you are in San Francisco).

I use Earthquake Pro and Last Quake. I like them both. Notifications can be tailored to my specs (I chose local) and just how local the received reports are depends on magnitude (Eq Pro). Example: I'm located near San Bernardino. If it's a 4 up near the Bay Area, I won't be advised, but if it's a Big One, I get the alert. Closer to me, I get reports of everything 3.5 and up. Choosing "local" also gets me reports from Northern Mexico, whereas choosing California or the US only wouldn't.

The Last Quake app allows participation via felt reports, testimonials, and photos. It also allows you to determine "near me" by inputting max distance from your location (starting at 62mi/100km out to 6214mi/10000km, including the setting "none") from your location and minimum magnitude from M1+ to M9+. There's also a switch for notifying you of destructive earthquakes, no matter the location. It even includes a "safety check" area where you can preload a list of people to text if you survive a destructive quake in your area.

The "depth" of the quake also makes a difference in energy on the surface. Yeah, I've felt a few.

Some small, some "attention getters."

Oh, that must be it. I have never looked at it that closely.

Prompted to chime in here. THIS IS EARTHQUAKE WEATHER (I know, there's no such thing but....)
February 9th 1971, I vividly remember it being HOT in February. I remember pretending I was Jerry West shooting hoops in my front yard.
January 17th, 1994, I vividly remember it being HOT in January.; I remember getting a sunburn in my back yard.

The 1994 event was the Northridge Quake, which occurred just after 4:30 a.m. It was the MLK holiday also. I felt that one some 175 miles away in Visalia. My family and I missed the 1971 Sylmar Quake. We were visiting family in Louisiana and had to fly back to L.A. Our home in Baldwin Hills sustained some damage to the foundation and the master bedroom.

We just had one the other day.
Our parrot usually screams very loud about 5 or 10 seconds before our quakes.

A little after the 94 quake I was at a party and overheard some dude saying "....ya, I was awake...my dog woke me up....I had the lights on and was leaning against the wall, just waiting...."
I walked over in said Hi and I asked him how far in advance.
I couldn't' believe his reply: TEN MINUTES with never any false positives or false negatives.
I can see the 5-10 seconds your bird senses P waves or S waves or something but TEN MINUTES?

I always use this sight and zoom in on my area. It gives earthquakes in real time.
