There is no snobbiness when people are dying. Don't be ridiculous. Why does SoCal have so many more deaths per capita? We are in the same state!

Yet here are the Covid deaths per 100,000 people as of today:

122 Los Angeles County
94 Riverside County
72 San Bernardino County
67 Orange County
56 San Diego County
44 Santa Barbara County
41 Ventura County

55 Marin County
49 Santa Clara County
44 Alameda County
43 Sonoma County
38 Santa Cruz County
34 Contra Costa County
33 San Mateo County
26 San Francisco County
25 Napa County
23 Solano County

The better question is, if masks truly do work and compliance by all metrics indicate an 80-90%+ compliance rate amongst Californians, why are so many people getting sick and dying?

It's quite simple actually. Would have thought someone so clever would be able to figure that out on his own. The answer is because there are more cases of covid. This in turn leads to more deaths.

You went through this much effort to get this information but can't figure out why there's more cases in SoCal? On a city data website nevertheless.

why are so many people getting sick and dying?

Why do "so many" people hate math?

The ratio of contagious people to new infections each day is far less than 10 or 20%. It means the cases spread at 1 or 2% - even though 10% of people are unmasked.

It means if masks did nothing - things would be way worse. If EVERYONE wore a mask - things would be way better.

If 98% of people where a mask - probably not much change. it's a tiny rate of transmission. one sick guy, no mask, probably infects 10 or 20 people himself...while 20 other sick people, mask or not, infect no one. That's what the data says. Please. Look at it. The "so many" sick people are practically ENTIRELY from the 10% NOT wearing masks.

According to the NY Times article linked in the OP: "Mask wearing is also more prevalent in the Bay Area."

The article uses a lot of anecdotal evidence, e.g. quoting a random science teacher who moved from S.F. to Koreatown who said, “I would say on your average walk out in San Francisco in the street 90 to 95 percent of people are wearing masks." “I just went out on a walk the other day in L.A., and about 30 or 40 percent of people weren’t wearing masks.”

Not sure where the data is on any of this, or if there really is any, as opposed to assumptions.

Imperial County's death rate per 100 K is 251.9, over double L.A. County's at 125.8. I wonder if this has to do with hospitals in the former county being overwhelmed.

And Stanislaus County is at 129.6, high, given its surrounding areas.
