Just glancing at Worldometer's county breakdown, out of 170,000 confirmed cases in this state, 132,000 are in Socal compared to only 38,000 cases in NorCal. That's a huge difference.

SoCal would still rank 3rd in total cases if it were it's own state, but NorCal, with 15 million people, would fall to 19th in league with states that have far fewer people.

What gives?

Due to the high number of confirmed cases and deaths in Los Angeles County, and pretty much answered on this thread:

Why so many covid 19 cases and deaths in LA County:

Yeah I just noticed that guys, aside from LA county, the rest of the state is doing very well relatively speaking.

90% of people up here are wearing face masks. I think that's probably the difference.

Los Angeles county alone has 10 million people. You can double that when you include other counties in SoCal.

35 deaths in L.A. County yesterday, 26 in Orange County.

In the last 14 days, per 100 K, Imperial County has the highest death rate at 16.6, followed by Kings County at 9.3, Tulare at 4.8, and L.A. County at 4.6.

Could be a lot of factors (controlling for population):

-Higher number/percentage of poor people who tend to have jobs where social distancing isn't possible and/or live in multi-family residences
-Higher overall population density (outside of a few counties in NorCal, LA is very dense compared to the rest of the state)
-Warmer weather for longer has led to more people outside and not social distancing (whether this is going to the beach, attending BLM rallies en masse, etc.)
-More red vs Bay Area - I'm not saying that LA is Republican but compared to the Bay Area, it has a higher percentage/number of Trump supporters who are making this a political game and not wearing masks/social distancing, etc.

4 suburban California counties behind dangerous rise in COVID-19 hospitalization

"Four suburban Southern California counties are among those primarily responsible for a dangerous rise in California’s coronavirus hospitalizations, according to a Los Angeles Times data analysis. The four counties have seen significant upticks in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in recent weeks.

Increases in Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties have contributed to an overall rise in hospitalizations recorded statewide that began after Memorial Day, just as officials were rapidly reopening the economy."
