In all 10 counties the Angels and Dodgers are expecting to play, the occurrence of coronavirus is on the rise.

The Times chose to illustrate the dangerous trend not by the number of positive cases, which would have been unreliable because of inconsistencies in testing and availability of results among the jurisdictions, but by tracking the number of COVID-19-related hospitalizations since May 10. Hospitalization data presents a sobering picture of those most seriously impacted by the infection.

The common thread is that leagues that have seen infections among players have been training in states with high rates,” said Dr. Celine Gounder, an infectious disease expert. “It’s not about the sport, per se. It’s that you’re in the middle of it. You’re in the hot zone. If you cannot create a real bubble, people are going to interact. They’re going to go to the restaurant. They’re going to hang out with their local woman du jour. That’s going to happen. So then infections are going to spread. That’s the reality.”

Recently? Riots and protests.

But they won't tell you that on the news.

Also, just from recent news, didn't Trump say that if you support him then you shouldn't wear a mask? There are more Trump supporters in SoCal than NorCal. Especially, Orange County (south county to be specific). Not to mention San Diego (Fallbrook).

That pretty much answers the OP's original question. More people more cases. Duh

Even if the population was the same between the two SoCal would still have more cases. It has a much higher rate of infection. The LA area has more than twice as many cases per capita as the Bay Area.

SAN FRANCISCO — An outbreak of coronavirus infections tied to parties connected to fraternities at UC Berkeley is imperiling the prospect of in-person fall semester classes, university officials warned.

In just one week, there have been 47 COVID-19 cases confirmed by the University Health Services system, the school said in a letter to the campus community.

Most of the 47 new cases “stem from a series of recent parties connected to the CalGreek system, which included students both within the CalGreek community and others, and led to some secondary spread within households and within other smaller gatherings,” said the letter written by Anna Harte, medical director of the campus’ health clinic, and Guy Nicolette, an assistant vice chancellor.

“Generally, these infections are directly related to social events where students have not followed basic safety measures such as physical distancing, wearing face coverings, limiting event size, and gathering outside,” the letter said.

Coronavirus: Deaths in California hit new high, but Bay Area continues to be spared

While California has hit new highs of infections and deaths, the Bay Area has so far staved off the worst of the virus. Cases and hospitalizations continue to rise in the region, but its 10 counties (population: 8 million) accounted for seven of the 135 fatalities (5%) statewide Thursday. Los Angeles (47), Orange (26), Riverside (18) and San Bernardino (11) accounted for the majority of the deaths Thursday.

The six southern-most counties in California have the highest death rates over the past week, when accounting for population: Los Angeles (23.5 deaths per 1 million in the past week), Orange (15.1 deaths per 1 million), Riverside (27.5 deaths per 1 million), San Bernardino (17.7 per 1 million), San Diego (11.3 per 1 million) and Imperial (149 per 1 million). In the Bay Area, the death rate was 4.9 per 1 million residents over the past week.
